On return I went to Leicester as senior registrar and obtained my CCT in 1989. In 1990  became consultant anaesthetist at Worthing District General Hospital  initially specializing in intensive care. In 2001 I became the departmental lead for preassessment.

In 2006 I was elected to the board of the Preoperative Association where I remained until 2017, having edited 2 editions of the Preoperative Association Guidelines in 2012 and 2017. In 2021 I edited the 3rd edition with Dr Rob Hill and this is still current. I retired from the NHS in 2018 and since then I have been preassessment clinical lead at BMI Goring Hall Hospital in Goring-by-Sea.
